I loved The Trumpet of the Swan and I wonder what it would feel like to read it now as an adult. I remember it as a magical book and I'm afraid that magic would be ruined in my adult head, you know? I also love the Misty of Chincoteague series, too, and I have first editions in my book case. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was my first "grown up" book, although it's told from a young girl's POV, but I think it was its length (and there were no pictures) that made it feel more adult to me at age...9 or 10, maybe? I'd definitely read that again.
Also, and don't hate me, one of my main characters doesn't like Anne of Green Gables in my first (still unpublished) novel because as a kid, I never could finish it. LOL
Love Jane Austen too. My favorite Jane Austen novel is Persuasion.
I totally agree with you about print books. I vastly prefer dealing with print pages rather than electronic books. There's something about the feel of the pages that I love.
All lovely suggestions and some of my favorites, too. I saved them and read them to my children and my daughter spent some summers reading them as well.
